Abus 85/50

As the title suggests, I have aquired an abus 85/50... I went on the abus website and it says it has mushroom pins. Here is where the problem lies, how does one go about picking mushrooms? I find info on spools but nothing on mushrooms.

This is my first higher security lock, probably a big jump from deadbolts and master padlocks.

Any advice would be greatly apreciated.

I never ran into mushroom pins, but I'm pretty sure you pick mushroom pins the same way you pick spool pins.

That always been my understanding.

This may be the blind leading the blind, but, in theory, both mushrooms and spools should bind in similar fashion, perhaps the mushroom to a greater extent then a spool, depending on how it is machined. I'd try the techniques used for Spool pins, and if those don't work - come back here and Varajeal will solve all your problems!

The above posts are correct use the techniques as for spools and you should be ok, i have only dealt with spools but from other posts some would say mushrooms are a little easier as the "slope" on them can help with the picking. Do a search on the spools but generally use very light tension.

The funny thing about mushrooms as opposed to spools is that the mushroom pin gradually binds into place, whereas the spool sort of "snaps" into place.

This can be a misleading feeling when you are trying to lift the pins.

Now, normally the large part of the mushroom is at the top, and there is a slight shelf at the bottom of the pin.

I had the hilarious experience once of picking, and disassembling a lock where the mushroom pins had been installed upside down.

The picking began with a click or snap into the grove, and then gradually lifted right out onto the shear line. The funniest thing I ever saw. Somebody wasn't awake that day at the lock factory.

As for picking, it is pretty much the same thing, and you simply feather the tension on the pins as they begin to bind up.
