Sanding

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Sanding

Postby Eyes_Only » 5 Oct 2007 12:32

Last night I had nothing to do while driving around in my work truck waiting for a lockout call from AAA so I decided to stop by Kragens real quick to see if there was any really fine grit sandpaper, and yup, finally found some 2000 grit sand paper after failing to find any at all the Auto Zones in my area.

So I bought it and got back in my truck and started sanding my Peterson picks. I could not believe how nice my picks look now. Looks like its platnium plated or something opposed to the ugly faded black paint that was there before.

As for making the pick more effective, well I guess I feel a little difference. Seems like there a tiny bit less drag in the plug while moving the pick around.

Overall I am please with the results and glad I finally took the time to do this after maybe hundreds of past posts where everyone highly encouraged sanding your picks for better performance.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

yep the Petersons come up with a near mirror finish. although i dont think theres that much noticeable difference between 2000 and normal 600 grit i always use the 2000 grit.

And for those who make their own picks out of hacksaw blades or something other and you have a Dremel or similar: cut a circular piece of sand paper and attach it to your Dremel and use the lowest speed setting :) Gets shiny and fast! :D

my preferred method is 200 grit, 600 grit, then polishing compound with the dremel and then a nice hand polish with some mothers... makes it purty

Having trouble finding Really fine grits of sandpaper?!

Try visiting your local Autobody and paint shop, most will gladly sell you a few sheets that they will have on hand. 1000+ is used for cut and buffing so they will have it available, just need to ask.

If all else fails, try flaggind down a MAC Tools or Snap-On truck and they should have it. Though, they will have it in quantity but they will not likely sell individual sheets.

I knew I wasn't wasting my breath when I kept harping on about the benefits of sanding picks lol.

You'll notice the most difference when using rakes - I swear they work better when they are nice and smooth. :)
