I started using "junior hacksaw" blades recently.
Lots less cutting and less wheels used on the dremmel.

how do you make a pick out of hacksaw blade?

Hi Mash, welcome to lockpicking!

You know making picks out of hacksaw blades, is in fact quite simple!

You'll need:
One hacksaw blade, one grinder, a bucket of cold water, a bunch of files, a marker and some 100, 200, 400 sand paper(the black one for metal, forgot the real name)!

You now need to decide what kind of pick style you want to make, you then draw the design directly on the hacksaw blade!

Now grind roughly around the drawing, putting the hacksaw blade in cold water at every 2-3 sec.

File the rest of the hacksaw blade with files, by hand, using light forward strokes!

Finish off with 100 then 200 then 400 sand paper!

Remember - Always use safety glasses!

Ps. I've never actually done it myself and I do not own a grinder!

in his defense, my search feature has not worked in about a week and a half. in fact i just typed in hack saw, home made, and a few other terms that should have popped up a how to and every time got some response saying basically the search returned no results. anyways, my opinion on homebrew hacksaw blades is that 1 the cooling of it is the most important part. 2 the sanding... take the extra 2 minutes and make it all smooth and pretty. and 3, my buddy is guilty of. Don't temper your picks. they will snap crazy quick.

Typically, hacksaw blades that are frequently cooled every few seconds of grinding do not need to be retempered. It's only when they are brought to an exceedingly high temperature that alters it's original state.

I experimented with it alot in the making of my picks (quenching very often, and grinding without cooling and retempering) and I have yet to find any occurring issues with them. Though, I have a system that works for either way I decide to make them.

By system, do you mean you've figured out a reliable way to temper the steel after it has been heated? If so, care to share?
