My tension wrench

Postby Proctor » 5 Oct 2007 12:10

Hey people,

When i had my tension wrench in a lock i bent it and now each time i stick it in a lock it gets easier & easier to bend and i have to keep bending it back..

So, what would happen if i bent the other side of it ? would it snap off ?

The part i mean to bend it obviously this side..

Thanks for your help

What is it made of? If you are bending the end inside the lock I would stop using it. The metal is weak and will break.

Hrm... it surprises me that your tension wrenches would be bending on you: even with a spring-loaded padlock cylinder, the relatively gentle twisting motion shouldn't be flexing the bend in the wrench. (Unless I'm misunderstanding the manner in which your wrench is bending?) Regardless, I would stop using the wrench if it's becoming progressively easier to bend it: that sounds like the metal is becoming quite fatigued. If you heat up the other end of the wrench (please take the appropriate safety precautions), you should be able to bend it and have it work just fine... there's nothing significant (from a metallurgical standpoint) about which end of the wrench the bend is placed on.

When you get frustrated it's a good time to stop and go do something else. You will never get anywhere if you get mad and beat up your tools.

If it got over-bent, then the metal has weakened along it's weakest point, usually at an already placed corner. Try to heat it to glowing orange, then squelching (dipping) in used motor oil. It'll retemper it.

Hm. Searching for "motor oil", "oil" and "temper" didn't turn up anything. Kinda odd, since the last time I was here, I seem to remember Mazola Oil Parties being a large thread

I'm blaming your english skills, but really: You do NOT steal anything!

BrownLeopard, use Google with an addition of "site:www.lockpicking101.com" (without the quotes), as the sites own search function is broken.

Tempering with oil has no kind of effects other than marginal in these applications.
