Universal Lockpick?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Universal Lockpick?

Postby BOUBOU » 11 Oct 2007 22:29

Hi everybody !

I am new to picklocking. And when I say new, I mean new :P

I don't know a lot of stuff about this "art" but I am willing to learn more about it. I've red some post on the forum, and I am even more interested.

Now it's the time to build the tools. I don't think I'll have any trouble with the tension wrench (I think its called like that ><) but I really don't know wich "lockpick" to choose.

I am gonna use this template to build my tool : profile.php?mode=activate&u=49924&act_key=ca059a42f95d1 , but I don't know wich one to choose, and since I only have 3 piece of hacksaw, I want to build those you use the most.

So here my question wich of these lock pick you use the most and are more "universal"? Please don't tell me the name of it (like diamond or camel or wathever) because it does'nt really tell me wich one it is. Let say that the top one is the number one and the bottom one the 17th.

Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad english, I am french ;). (I am pretty sure this has been asked before, but I didnt know what to search for...)

Kaotik Edit - Fixed link and relabeled the subject title

Ummmm... I think newbie mod might have hurt your link a bit. :? :P Sorry 'bout that. :)

Anyway.... in answer to your question... make a small hook. Simple as that. Bar none, it's the most functional and "universal" (as you'd put it) pick tool going.

A reasonably close second would be a small half diamond, but I'd still take the hook any day of the week.

Happy picking!

I second that. Most of us who have a number of years of experience in picking locks will rely mainly on their short hook pick. In fact thats all I ever use at work. My Peterson short hook and SouthOrd slimline short hook gets more time out of my pick case for work than any of my rakes. I havent used a diamond pick in years.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Small hook (the one shaped like a small hook)

Half diamond (the one with the little triangle one side of the end)

Snake Rake or Bagota .... looks like ____________/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

The "K.night I.ndustries T.wo T.housand" Will open every lock
it has ever been tested on. It's kinda big and expensive though.
But for the speed and...well... COOLNESS, it cant be beat.

I cant say much more about it in the open forum.
Anything that uses EMP is definately an advanced topic.

Sorry dude but i cant agree with that. that bogota is great if the keyway and pinning allows it but SPP is more reliable if you practice enough. short hook will open about 80% of tumblers (guestimation)

I'll disagree with that, since you can SPP with a Bogata, and you will also get, generally, faster openings. And it will deal with a lot of wafer locks too.

However, if it was a case of "one of each" then yes, I'd go for a J and a bit of wiper blade.

Got to wonder why you don't want to buy a few picks and tension tools, though. Half the fun is going "You only have 35 picks?" at others.

I quite like the Bogota half diamond and hooks - They slide down tight keyways, and are very nice to use.

Aside from the locks where the actual thickness of the metal on the Bogotas prevent them from entering the lock, I would rate them highly.

Wow ! Thanks everyone for your answers!

Sry for the wrong link... keyboard :P

I meant this template : http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p251/mjwhit/17PieceSet-v2.jpg

So I'll try the second one on the template, the small hook, the diamond 7th the templade and the 13th one like a snake.

I am not quite sure what Bogota is ? Is it a kind of lockpick, a company ?

And finnaly do you think I can build 3 lockpick with 1 hacksaw blade or they'll be to small? (My hacksaw blade is 12 inch. I don't know if it is standard :P)

Well once again Thanks for your help :)

Well I've done a hook lockpick and a tension wrench today. They are okay, not amazing, but it still do the job (I think/hope :P)

I tried to lockpick my front door, I got the 2 first pin, but I can't get those 3 last pin. It seems like my tension wrench does not give the necessary space to the lockpick to push the pin. I tired 30 min, I think I once got the 3 pin, but I released the tension wrench and it felt back... Do you have any tip or advice with this problem ? Is the pressure on the tension wrench constant or you have to give some loose for the pin to get "stuck" up there?

I know I am a begginer and trying for the first time his front door is not the greatest idea, but that's the only lock I have that is "normal" :P

Well hopefully you'll have some tips for me to help me out ;)

DONT USE YOUR FRONT DOOR!
Unless you usualy go through the back door and NEVER ues the front.
Because accidents happen. Just ask Murphy.
Sure you can do it a THOUSAND times.... but on 1001.... pop....
And your door is %&*@#$

Dont practice on locks you rely on.

Dont use your car, unless you like getting in through the passenger door.
Dont use the trunk....... for obvious reasons.

Oh yeah... if you practice with handcuffs....
dont while you are wearing them.
