When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Price Gouging?

Postby Kinroan » 18 Oct 2007 20:03

ok...i was wondering if there has been some sort of price increase in the past year or so...me and a friend got into picking and practiced it quite a bit for about a year. Since then, some of my picks got bent and such, but i lost the rest in a move and haven't had time to worry about it, with Graduation and getting into college and all, but i've felt the itch to get back into it lately.

There's only one problem....the prices seem to have tripled....i dont remember where i bought my starting set, but i bought this oneand other picks i wanted singularly. When i bought this set it was $9.95 about 2 years ago...now its pretty much $30 dollars everywhere i look...am i missing something or is everywhere this high now?

I don't recall them being that cheap, but regardless they are very well made picks and even at that price they are worth every penny.

SouthOrd raised the price on that particular set from $27.95 to $29.95 in the past 3 years. I'm in agreement with linty; I don't remember the price ever being that low, either. Lockpickshop tends to stay in somewhat close line with SouthOrd's direct prices, too.

Certain websites will gouge you, though, if we want to make this a less specific thread...

If anything, the price of picks have come down. Especially since there has been a huge increase in the amount of suppliers of picks online in the past 5 years.

The price of the raw material has gone up, but I'm not sure how that visualizes in the consumer end.

Kinroan - did the picks you bought a few years ago have metal handles attached to the blade of the pick, or were they just a single piece of flat metal(SouthOrd call these their 'standard' picks)?

The reason I ask is that 'standard' picks are a lot cheaper than the equivalent picks with the metal handles & the set you have linked to is a set with the handles. This might help explain the price difference.

In case you aren't aware, you can get a 10% discount if you buy your picks at this site's sponsor http://www.lockpickshop.com, and also at http://www.lockpicks.com I believe.

All you need to do is enter the voucher code "lp101" when buying.

Did you perhaps buy the $9 sets somewhere else?
If so, please post a link for the rest of us....

I think I know why you had that set for 10$~. Perhaps the leather case was free. Maybe some sort of deal. because I know that if you buy the leather case separatly, it cost around 20$~ that's why I'm ordering my set in the "make your set" feature, without taking the leather case =)
