Are there any guides here (i have searched) to make a cutaway, for pin picking practice? - I know that i could purchase one, but if i make my own, i will probably learn more and become more interested.

thanks :)

The search function on the site is not working at this time. There are many threads on cutaway locks. You can use google to search this site. Search for cutaway+lockpicking101.com. Personally, I like your sig so +1

I like the sig. For a beginner cutaway you'll want to work on a KIK (key in knob lock) as theres less material to remove.

Remove the pins, and file away to expose the pin stacks. Pics- http://s64.photobucket.com/albums/h192/ ... 20Cutaway/

Hope this helps,

A KIK cylinder is definately where to start, and while I haven't posted a guide on a KIK cylinder yet as long as you can get the cylinder out, you could follow the cutaway guide I just put up for padlocks:
http://mitchcapper.com/?p=3

As the cylinders between a padlock and KIK are basically the same.

To get the cylinder out of a kwikset (probably cheapest unless you were looking to do a specific lock) you could follow their rekeying guide:

http://www.kwikset.com/Trade/Literature/Resources/Rekeying%20Manual.pdf Look around page 6(page 10 in pdf pages), Rekeying Knobs.

wow the first time one of my posts was linked to I feel proud =)

OK to answer the op with a question of my own.

What type of cut away are you looking for?

If your looking to make a cut away out of a pad lock you really need one that has a removable core. If your just looking for any type a kik will be the easiest and there are several different ways to go about doing it. If you do have any questions when you get started feel free to PM me and I will try and your question if I can not then one of the other members will.

any really, just so i can get used to the feel of single pin picking, which ever would most likely to be the easiest

In that case I would definitly go with the KIK style lock.
I ended up getting a couple for free when I stopped by my local lockie and told him I was trying to make a cut away.
