the regular common masterlocks i can shim without a problem, but i've never been successfull at shimming these. i understand that they have 2 ball bearings so all you have to do is shim both sides correct?
what am i missing?

I haven't played with the specific model of padlock you mention, but generally speaking you can’t shim a padlock which uses a double ball bearing locking system. This is because there is a cam which locks the balls in place. It doesn’t matter whether you shim one side or both sides, if you try to open it this way you will probably just chew up your shims. I’m afraid you’ll have to use a different method to open this one.

Shimming (usually) doesn't work with padlocks with ball bearing locks. Shimming pushes back the locking mechanism in "regular" padlocks. In these padlocks, there is a turning element which presses the ball bearings into the shackle. To open the lock, ths element has to be turned or retracted. Otherwise, the ball bearings just press against the element. As you (usually) can't reach this element with your shims, there is no way to shim the lock. Also, in most locks this element is not spring-loaded, but directly connected to the cylinder. So without turning the cylinder, you can't unlock the shackle.

You guys say "usually" and "generally speaking" you can't shim a DBB padlock. Which ones does it work on?
(I don't think it's possible.)

i'm with gordon here. The way the ball bearings sit, they have nowhere to move until the plug is turned. Even if you could get a shim in beside one somehow it would accomplish nothing.

To be honest, I used the words “generally speaking†simply because I know I don’t have all the answers and so I try to avoid dealing in absolutes. I suppose a better choice of words would have been to say that “I’ve never been able to shim a double ball bearing padlock, but just because I haven’t seen one doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t exist.†I've seen some pretty funky locks in different countries where I lived while growing up, and I guess the overwhelming variety has just stuck in my mind. Sorry if I muddied the waters.

Do we have to pick fights over such small and pointless things?
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

bypass methods are usualy left for the advanced forums from what I understand, there are a couple of options, but In fear of breaking the rules, I wont be posting them here.

Simply learn to impression, silly boy.

I don't know if it's just me, but this sounds to me like he doesn't actually own the lock. Why are you on a picking website if you are only loooking for ways to bypass padlocks and not pick them? Just seems kinda strange to me.
