Brinks deadbolt w/security pins

Just as an fyi, I went to the local Walmart this morning and purchased a Brinks padlock (series 2017-119, satin nickel finish) to learn how to change lock pins. Interestingly enough, two of the five driver pins were mushroom pins! If anyone wants to get a lock cheap (about $12) that has security pins in it, this is a good place to start. I just started with locksport so just thought I'd let ya'll know.

The security pins were spool pins, not the previously mentioned mushroom pins.

Dag nabbit, I got all excited about learning of a commonish lock that uses mushroom pins. Thanks for the tip.

Also, I have one to provide that I've used countless times. If you look relatively respectable and walk into a locksmith shop you can get a lot of information and sometimes freebies. When I found myself wanting some spool pins way-back-when, I went down to a local lockie and was honest with him. I asked if I could buy some spools to improve my picking (as a hobby). He gave me a handful of them at no charge. This also seems to be the norm. I've lost small parts from various locks (esp medeco), and all of the lockies I've asked have given me the parts for free and sometimes even installed them. After that experience, I've developed a really good relationship with that locksmith. Every month or so, I stop in and talk locks. I can't afford to buy much from them (the shop is huge and features hundreds of mostly antique locks/safes) unfortunately though.

Not sure if you have many yales over there, but a yale cylinder I have has 3 mushrooms, although most the other yales I have use spools instead.

That actually a good idea, to go to a local locksmith and talk honestly about the sport of lock picking. I think I might do that myself. Who better to learn about locks from?
