you cant take nail clippers on a plane. I doubt you will be allowed picks. though that said i doubt they are on the list of things you cant have :P

If I were you I would throw a couple of vcheap ones in my carry on and if they stop me just let them take them. If not then your "safe". Well as safe as picking in public gets.

I'd say it definately isn't worth the hastle, they will (at least over here) confiscate them, and once they do you may be in for some interesting questions and a good search and its basicly gona be a waste of time if not worse.

I taped a pair of Bogota picks to the inside of my shoes when i went to Florida not long ago. When the alarm went off I just pointed to the metal tags on my laces and placed my shoes on the floor. I had a few lock cylinders in my hand luggage, but they didn't point that out, and let it go straight through the X-Ray thingy-ma-jiggy. They popped my shoes over to the other side of the scanner and i walked through and put them back on - sure livened up the plane trip.

I got a set of Bogota picks on a plane to Ireland by cutting the back of my belt, and slipping them into the belt itself. When the scanner went off i just pointed to the metal belt buckle and they let me walk straight through the scanner wearing it.

You could take a safety pin to hold up your trousers, and include a few paper clips clipped onto a newspaper or other item - Both of these items will allow you to practice and will likely be of little bother if found by the custom's officials.

The best advice would probably be to just put them in your general luggage so you don't risk any delays to your flight.

I don't know what Japanese customs are like, but they can't be much harder than getting into the US after the 9/11 atrocity.

Not to say anything against illusion but I am not sure trying some of the tricks he did to hide the picks would be a good idea. It may work 9 times out of 10, but when they find picks taped to the inside of your shoe or slipped inbetween your belt buckle you are going to have a lot harder time explaining it.

I agree with mitch, if you really have to pick, just drill some holes in them and keep them in your keyring. It'd look pretty bad if you get caught clearly trying to hide something from them.

The original poster wanted to know if anybody had taken picks onto a plane - I responded as honestly as I could.

I answered the question to the best my ability.

You on the other hand didn't, at all.

I suggested that the original poster not attempt what I had done should they not wish to invite trouble. The original poster therefore has a choice with all the information present from both sides of the 'field'. Your post had nothing to contribute, and more so didn't answer the question in any way.

Now get off your little ivory tower of judgment, or perhaps you could even try answering the question - now gee, isn't that a funny idea! Instead of coming up with something constructive you could just state the obvious and contribute nothing useful - What a splendid idea!

Now sod off, or actually answer the question.

And to think people wonder why nobody bothers to help others on this site anymore...

i have flown a few times with my southord jacknife set and everytin=me i forget to take it of my key ring, i always get the security guards trying to rip it apart to see what it is and asking me why im bringing knifes with me, and these are only flights to little comunities not to other states, so i wouldnt recomend taking your picks on a plane, its not worth the hassel

Don't do it. In many places lock picks are not legal for you to carry without a professional reason to do so. Airplanes/ports are probably the worst place to try it on. Japan to boot - I have it on good advice that they are well versed in strip search and don't bother giving you privacy while they're doing it.

Apart from that, picks look like something you could stab someone with, so a very bad call for airplane luggage.

Japan is a particularly xenophobic country - just look at their latest news about fingerprinting all non-Japanese born people both inside the country and coming into the country. Japanese-born people are exempt, naturally.

what type of picks are they? are they hacksaw blade picks, windshield wiper picks or street sweeper bristle picks or professional bought picks?

if their the thinner picks like windshield wiper and bristle picks, i would suggest tossing them in with a bunch of similar stuff such as a pen case full of pens, then they will think its some wierd pens, or if its the hacksaw picks or profesional picks, i would suggest filing alll the teeth on the hacksaw first and then throw that in with a bunch of objects shaped like that like if your wife has a box of those paper type nail files (just be sure to let her know), or like somebody said before, attach them to a keychain and send them through the xray, if they stop you just give up the picks their not worth missing your flight.

im going to California for Christmas and i would love to pick locks to pass the time (my own locks), so im going to throw them into a glasses case and if they ask me about them im gona be completely honest, that their for my hobby and show them the locks as well if they still confiscat ethem then oh well, ( i wouldnt bring any picks that i value too much like if you bought some from rai or kaotik or locknewbie ect...)

so yeah...

When's the last time you used an airport? This sounds like a good was to miss your flight.

You guys are pretty paranoid. I just put them in my carry on bag. I don't try to conceal them in any way. Never once been a problem.

Has anyone here actually tried approaching a security person at the airport before the flight and explaining the situation? The only real problem I see is the fact that they 'look' like 'stabbing tools', but if you think about it, your arms are MUCH more dangerous weapons then picks (which would most likely break at a decent stab at someone).

Cool concealment illusion, lol. Did anyone (like the flight attendants or other passangers) give you really strange looks or ask you questions for picking locks on the plane though?
