masterlock combo lock third number

Postby shimbuddy » 24 Oct 2007 19:45

i dont know if someone found this out before

when you are finding the third number on the pad lock it is some times hard to see what number it is. it is accually very hard because my third number is one of the similar numbers that comes up in the 12 numbers. ex 0.5, 4, 7.5, 10.5, 14, 17.5, 20.5, 24, 27.5, 30.5, 34, 37.5 the whole numbers are 4, 14, 24, 34 my number is 14. this makes it hard to find the number.

i was playing with my lock yesterday and when i went over the third number and pulled very very hard there was no grinding when you are able to turn the dial a little. all of the other 11 numbers grind a little. the third number will not grind. try this on your lock when you already know the last number. go to the last number and pull extreamly hard. the dial will stop between the numbers like ussual but will still move between the number freely no matter how hard you pull. the others will become harder to twist between the numbers the harder you pull.

this is helpful if you have my case or even when it is hard to tell what number out of the twelve it is.

yea the guide on wiki about opening combination locks... the third number actually worked out for me, and my first and second numbers were in the range that you are supposed to try out. However trying out 100 different combinations isn't really my thing so I prefer my shimmy.

Well it actually only takes 3-5 minutes if you know what your doing, ie progressing the second number instead of going through each combo. On top of that you will statistically not have to run through all 100 to get the combo.

is there a way to getting the second number without doing the 100 combinations?

not that anybody knows of... the combinations shouldn't really take that long though, you just have to have a little patience. :D

Not exactly, but for example if you are trying the following combos:
1-11-5
1-15-5
1-19-5
1-23-5
1-27-5
1-31-5
Rather than running each, combo, enter the first one (1-11-5), try it, then turn CCW to the next second number (15), then back to 5, try it, then to 19, etc... it doesn't take long at all.

Yeah that is how I go through the combos.

How did I miss the "don't feel friction" technique, lol (Guess its because I always just shim masterlocks). I have been trying out the method on my master lock from work and couldn't get the last number (Didn't know it because I don't actually lock my locker and had forgotten the combo ,been over a year I don't use it.) It ended up being 32 which matched my other numbers so I disregarded it.

So Although you arn't the first person to mention it I'm going to thank you because it's the first time I paid attention to the method.

This is because the "fake" last numbers are cut into the wheel that contains the last number. I believe the pictures on "how stuff works" show the inner workings pretty well, plus I've taken several apart (maybe I should post some pics). The last number is cut much deeper to allow the lock to open. I think this method may work better on older locks. I tried it on a brand new Master lock, and it worked, but it would have been much harder to tell if I hadn't already known the last number. It did work, though.

Excellent observation! :D

But, because some numbers cant be used with others...
they cant be TOO close.. the posts inside banging together wont allow it.

there are actually only like 60 combos......
