No locksmith will teach you to pick locks. They will defintly kick you out apon request.
Read the MIT Guide, buy some picks, buy a lock, and practice.

I can certainly understand why a locksmith wouldn't want to teach a random person off the street how to pick locks, but would they be as hesistant to sell security pins for someone to practice with? Is there a better place to find any kind of security pins to mess around with than bugging the local locksmith? Also, would the pins work in more than one type of lock? (i.e. schlage, kwik-set, Faultless...) Thanks.

A locksmith gave me security pins to mess with, although he was a really, really nice guy, you could try. Just keep in mind most locksmiths will not stock security pins.

Perhaps a better question would be to ask your local locksmith where you can learn/train to become one as well. I don't know how big of an interest you have, but this is definately one option. 8)
