Becoming a Locksmith in CA

Postby rwp42 » 8 Nov 2007 11:44

I thought I'd share my own journey in becoming a certified, bonded, licensed locksmith in Southern California. I hope that it helps others who wish to do the same. Here is a summary of the steps I have taken:

1) Spent quite a bit of time doing 'research' on this forum and the net in general. Based on my own needs and the opinions of others, I decided that Foley-Belsaw was the right starting school for me.

2) Signed up with FB. My experiences there can be found in a separate thread. Suffice to say, it was very positive. Total cost: $599. I paid in advance and had all thirty lessons shipped at once.

3) I worked through all thirty lessons and submitted my homework and exams to FB for grading.

4) Visited the www.bsis.ca.gov site to learn about licensing requirements. You can download instructions and forms there. CA requires "Live Scan Fingerprinting" -- so I also looked up the info on a local Live Scan site.

5) Paid $51 (CA fees) + $18 (operator fee) to Live Scan operator to have my fingerprints electronically submitted for DOJ and FBI processing.

6) Paid $8 to have passport photos taken for BSIS Identification App.

7) Completed BSIS documentation. This includes a Locksmith License app, Personal Identification form, Business Name Request, and Live Scan forms from #5 above.

8) Since I am using my own name and not a special business name, I do not need a "Doing Business As (DBA)". This saved me some money and time. If you do require a DBA, you will have to file one with your local paper and wait for it to be published before continuing with the next steps.

9) I opened a business checking account with a local bank.

10) Visited my local city gov't site and downloaded the business license form.

11) While waiting for paperwork to be processed, I very carefully prioritized an initial expenditure for key blanks, pinning kit, critical tools, and general supplies. My budget for this initial expense is $1500. I don't want to spend more than this until I have practical experience to justify additional purchases.

12) Wrote a letter of introduction for myself describing my qualifications to a potential master locksmith mentor.

13) I used the local yellow pages to list locksmiths in my area that I can contact for potential apprenticeships. I also thought about any friends and/or family who might know someone that I can apprentice to.

14) Maintain a realistically humble view that even after all of the above, I still am a beginning novice in the art/craft of locksmithing.

This is where I am right now. It's an exciting journey so far!

BSIS Fees

Postby rwp42 » 8 Nov 2007 11:45

Besides the Live Scan fee mentioned previously, there is a $75 BSIS fee for Locksmith License application.

What is your opinion of the Foley-Belsaw course? Too hard? To easy? Just right?

How do you rate the cost given what you end up with at the end of the course?

Are there enough examples and are the supplied tools and equipment adequate?

I saw a forum discussing this course, and just wanted to get your input, as you've taken it.

All the best with your new enterprise. Keep us posted on how things progress.

I have many posts in the main thread: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=1073&start=360

about the FB course. In short, I found it to be completely worth the money.

About how long did it take you to jump through all of the legal hoops and get this far?

I spent about four weeks doing the initial research, reading stuff on this forum and others, and generally reacquainting myself with the state of the craft.

It took me about three weeks total to register with FB and complete the courses. They are mailing out my diploma and advanced courses today.

I spent a day researching BSIS, local city business licenses, and banks. Then a couple of days (as time permitted) to take care of bank account, Live Scan fingerprinting, passport photos, and completing the documentation packets. (not needing a DBA shaved about a week off this process)

I've been prioritizing purchases since the beginning. I started a master list of all possible tools and supplies for Locksmithing, pulled from threads on this site and others, then started whittling it down based on things I already had or would be provided by FB class. I then iteratively reordered the list based on input from this forum and my own experience into a few basic categories: needed immediately, needed later, wanted, and not necessary. This has helped me plan my financial investment in the craft considerably.

So all told, I've been at this process for about three months -- about a month of which was 'actual work'.

A note on BSIS timing: they say that you shouldn't even ask about your status for at least four weeks. I mailed the packet this week, so it will likely be December before I know whether my license has been granted.

It's been two months, and my calls to them only yield that they are waiting on the DOJ/FBI background check. I'm guessing that the holidays significantly slowed things down. Oh well... patience is a virtue, right? ;-)

I am not working -- at least until my license comes through. When it does, I intend to work part time around my area. In the meantime I study, practice, and duplicate keys.

The advanced courses come automatically when you complete the main course. You get three: advanced locks, safes, & alarm systems. The first of them should come with your diploma.

Followup

Postby rwp42 » 30 Jan 2008 17:13

I found out yesterday that my license (CA) was just sent to the printers, and should be in my hands within a week! This part of the process has been a lesson in extreme patience and diligent followup. To those who follow, I recommend that you wait four weeks and then call once a week to find out your status. I ended up having to call the Live Scan service and verify that my results had already been submitted before the BSIS would acknowledge that my license should have been issued already.

Anyway, road-block cleared -- moving on. The next steps should be relatively quick and involve submitting my city business license, obtaining a reseller's permit from the State Board of Equalization, and then registering with a few local distributors. I am debating whether the HPC CodeSource CD-ROM would be a worthwhile purchase this early on, but otherwise have all the tools and raw materials I can foresee at the moment.
