Over picking a pad lock

Postby otis » 19 Jun 2004 0:59

Is it posible to over pick a pad lock? I picked the lock about ten times and can't do it again. The key works fine, but when I put the tension wrench in with very little tension I here a slight click which I didn't here when I first purchased the lock. The lock is a I think is a take off a Master lock which is called a "homecenter", made in China 40mm.
Thanks for any input,
Otis

Hmm...thats strange, ive never had that happen to me before. Try a few different methods of picking or using a different pick. Another option is if you have, or can make a slim line type pick, try using the hook pick and lift each pin one at a time. Hope that helps a lil.

I dont know what the click is but if the key still opens it you should still be able to pick it. Sometimes you just gfet stuck on a lock even one youve picked many times before. I would try and go and work it again. I have a few locks like masters that will click from pins setting. It could just be that.

Maybe you were just adding a little to much pressure on the barrel and the noise you heard were the pins setting. You might need to take a break from that lock and go back to it another day.

Many times I've opened a lock several times in a row, then suddenly I couldn't open it. I would then have a 'Zen' moment and go back and open it.

it might just be that I'm bad at this or:

picking it with too much tension may have rounded the pinheads, causing them to set with just tension...look at the key, if it has any VERY low cuts there might be pins that just set almost by themselves

OR you've deformed the very weak brass. I have a lock that I can BARELY pick/rake anymore since I've picked it so many times. it used to be SUPER easy, now its next to impossible.

Inflation however, may have changed this.
...
edit: yup, its definately 43 now

Just wondering, its doubtful since its a cheap padlock but could it be possible that theres some security tumblers in there? Cos i just came back from rekeying and picking a schlage cylinder with spool pin drivers in it and noticed that it kinda makes those clicking sound you're talking about without feedback of the pins setting or anything. Maybe you can try picking it in the opposite direction? Unless your padlock doesnt allow that. Cos that worked for me on my schlage cylinder.

Maybe its master keyed (you never know what them commies are doing in there factorys while plotting against us). Its possible a spacer fell into the key way and keeps falling in and only the key manages to move it. It would explane the click. I had a thought about the other 10 times but I d;on't remember

Many knockoff padlocks contain spool pins. They look like they are trash, but many are a real bear to pick.

Take a break! This happens sometimes to me as I get too familiar and then start doing "funny" things and it's a tension problem or something else I'm not doing right. Take a break, go for a walk, come back and try over again. :)
