Euro Cylinder Lock Help...

Postby dannywalker » 10 Nov 2007 21:14

Im in the forces and due to come out soon, and Im looking at becoming a locksmith when I leave. Ive got my locksmith course coming up soon and want to get a head start at things.

Basically Im practising on a euro cylinder lock off the door and can pick it with relative ease, off the door (once picked) the plug in the middle spins no problem....

Trying on my door to pick and unlock it.when i pick it the lock just spins round and locks again without unlocking the door.

Any ideas

Cheers guys

i believe thats a faux pas of lock picking. never pick a lock that you rely on or one that is in use. i guess that is because if a pick breaks or you damage a lock (which you can apparently damage a lock even with professional tools and a proper technique) which would leave it in a non working condition

Put the key in the side you are going to pick and make sure it operates. Remove key then pick as normal. Once picked it will operate mechanism.

But we all know not to pick locks you rely on right?

As an aside..... I reckon that when you replaced the cylinder in the door you had the key in the outside half of the lock (you needed the key to turn the cam slightly so it could enter lock) and once inserted you removed key. That half was now 'active'.

You closed the door and picked the inside 'inactive' half. The plug turns once picked but just spins around as it doesnt engage mechanism.

Or vice versa but you get the picture.

Get hold of a cheap secondhand euro and strip down to see the internal components and you will see why only one side is active at any given time. There is a sticky somewhere on here about it.

Pick it, and then push the handle of a tension wrench down the keyway. You need to push on the spring loaded component at the back of the cylinder, which will engage the cam, so that turning the cylinder opperates the lock.

Exactly as mhole says, the euro cylinder is supposed to have a key in it to turn the cam in the middle, not only does the key correctly align the pins it also servers to turn the cam.
So you push your tension wrench into the back of the plug, and turn the cam, depending on the torque required you may only partially turn it and not fully open it. Better hope you can return it to it's correct position, or you could be in trouble.
Don't pick locks on doors, unless your getting paid to do so!

Of course that is how to turn the cam if 'wrong' side picked. I didnt suggest that as the OP couldnt understand how his cylinder could be picked out of the door and cam turns and not when in the door.
