I.D. a lock

I have been reading all the FAQs and guides and what i can see is one of the most important things is know what lock your working with. I have a lock i am trying to pick which i found on an old door (On the Cheap) and i cant tell what type of lock it is. Is there a check list to figure out what type of lock it is or is it something you learn to recognize different types of locks. Also it has like a turn handle on the back side which if you turn it opens the lock.

It's usually written on the face of the lock. If not, then the keyway is a place to start.

If it's not on the door, check the key. If it's not on the key, check the side of the door where the latch or deadbolt is. If it's not there, take a picture and post here.

That key head is from a DOM RS System lock. It is a fairly standard (but reasonably high quality) pin-tumbler lock, with either 5 or 6 pins (RS5 or RS6). Assuming that your lock was factory-pinned, at least two of the drivers are typically spools, and at least two of the key pins are likely to be a sort of ball-like "mushroom" shape. That series does not, to the best of my knowledge, have any profile pins (active or passive).

Is it meant to have one pin right at the front. I mean really close to front. I was thinking it might be some sort of security measure. It goes all the way up to the metal guide thing its even hard to get a pick above it to push it down.

Is this some sort of security thing or just the way its pins are aranged
