Jk, thank you for the kind words. I'm just happy to see other locksporters that can share the joy's of running a successful organization. Its really a rewarding process. We are participating in something that has a huge amount of potential for future growth, and by joining early and working hard, you can be a key part to the future of this wonderful hobby. I want Locksporting to be the kind of thing, that doesn't show up as misspelled when I type it in a word document. :) Haha. Or the kind of hobby that has a following, and regularly scheduled competitions that aren't confined to a corner in the Netherlands every year. Something that brings awareness, preparedness, ethics, and excitement to thousands of people all over the world.

Don't you want to be apart of such a powerful idea?

That was more of an insult than you could have ever imagined. There is lots of humor in everything I write, so don't take me too seriously. But on a more serious note. That hurt.

well doug, take it from me, it wasn't meant to be an insult. just thought that the three military folk present last night would have gotten a chuckle. sorry for stepping on the toes. at any rate, i am now definetly going to start researching locksport. sounds very interesting.

You guys already know how I feel about trying to get a group together. I'm all for it. I don't know as many people that are as enthusiastic about it though. My brother is starting to pick it up & I have a friend out at sea right now that is into lockpicking as much as I am.

BTW, Cryptonic, next round's on you. lol :)

Well, the big thing with being an L.I chapter is getting outsiders interested and maybe even hooked (like a dealer giving out free samples) and raising community awareness. Sort of like the usual "yes, we're picking locks for fun", but with a little more "would you like to try it, anyone can learn!" So that would mean dealing with strangers and teaching folks from the ground up. The hope being that they return to the next meeting after having done tons of research all week and practiced until their fingers bled. That's my understanding anyway.

Alright folks,

It has been confirmed that we are having meeting #2 this week. We will be meeting at a new location, though. The general group consensus was: screw Bennigan's. The place was too expensive and it was too..."restauranty" in my opinion. I found another spot that is also a little more central to all of us. It's a neat little bar/restaurant called Sarah's Irish Pub (http://sarahsirishpub.com). I had dinner and a beer there today and it seems like its at least worth a shot. Everyone knows everyone, so we'll be strangers for a bit, but they all were very friendly. They were also mostly old people, but that may have been because its a weekday. We plan to meet on Saturday, and I've already cleared the whole lockpicking issue with the owner. They had no problem with it and seemed cheerful about the idea. PS: There's parking in the back. Here's the goods:

Where?

Sarah's Irish Pub
38 E. Mellon Street
Phoebus, VA 23663
(757)722-2373

When?

6PM - 9PM (although I'll likely be there at 5PM)
Saturday, November 17, 2007

Who?

Anyone is welcome from newbie to expert! So far myself, Emrys, cryptonic, and a handful of our friends,etc.. are expected to show. Reply here if you think you can make it, but if you decide at the last minute to just show up, that's cool too :-)

What?

Lots of lockpicking and discussion. We'll also discuss the idea of trying to reach out to the public and spread the sport. This discussion will include considering becoming a part of Locksport International.

How?

That's what we intend to discuss :-)

Update!

The address I listed there does not resolve on Google Maps (I thought it did), here is an alternate address (same place) that does show a result with Google Maps:

38 E Mellen St
Hampton, Virginia 23663

Here's a link (assuming it works): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=38+E+Mellen+St,+Hampton,+Virginia+23663&sll=37.019002,-76.32185&sspn=0.008069,0.014591&ie=UTF8&ll=37.019002,-76.32185&spn=0.008069,0.014591&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1

Of course, PM sent.

In other news, I have one confirmed buddy coming and one maybe (moving that day). I'll be printing out some materials related to L.I to help aid discussion.

reach out

Postby raimundo » 20 Nov 2007 8:18

about reaching out to the public, I think that has to be done in a very low key way, many of them will never like the sport. The ones who are attracted to it will find you. Reaching out will probably activate some negativists who had other things to think obsess on until they found out about locksport.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!
