New lock question

Postby splister » 12 Nov 2007 18:29

Hello,Im seeking a new lock to pick. Ive been picking locks for about 2 moths now. Ive picked cheap padlocks, masters, brinks disc locks, and a brinks brass padlock (max security). I know it had 5 pins, 2 or 3 being spool pins. I am considering a master #532. Would a master #930 be too hard? Please comment.

The #532 would be the logical next step. In my experience the #930 is a little harder, but certainly not impossible at your level. You might also look for the Brinks repinnable lock, available at Walmart for ~$18 if i remember correctly. It is 5 pins, 4 of which are security pins and it comes with everything you need to repin the lock and try different pin arrangements. It's a padlock, but you usually find it with the deadbolts and door locks.

This is right about where I am as well.

I just finished the Master #532, and was very happy with it. It feels nice and smooth in your hand, and the four spools make it difficult, especially when compounded with a bitting that jumps from very shallow to very deep. You might want to look through the plastic packaging and check out the keys, to avoid ones with generic bitings.

As for the Brinks rekeyable, I just bought one today. A Brinks Series 527 padlock, which I haven't made virtually any progress into. It seems much harder than the #532, but that once again might be due to a harder bitting.

It might be a good idea to make a chart or post regarding the natural progression of locks, starting with a reduced pin kwikset and showing a jump-by-jump of which locks would be in the next range of difficulty.

Thanks, I picked up a master #575 today. I got it for $2.00 lol. I hope this will be a challenge, Ive picked it once already, but the keyway is pretty restrictive.

Or you could go for some (Kwikset or Schlage) deadbolts as well :P .

Actually I was referring to the "Brinks Housekey Lock", I believe is how they market it. It is a brass padlock, thicker than most but still in the rectangular shape. The Brinks Series 527 is significantly harder, moreso than the similar looking Master #930 I'd say.

Before you pick a lock:
The first thing that you should do is check to make sure that
the lock is your's and secondly make sure its not in use.
