Okay, this question is over asked, I know. Unfortunately, I've never asked it or found the answer. How can you tell that a key pin is out of the way of the sever line? Is there a feeling? Can you tell by the way the key pin is positioned?

Most of lockpicking is by feel, when the pin is set you will no longer fell the pressure as you lift it, lerning to feel this difference in pressure is something practice will gain. "Shear Line", you could turn the cylinder upside down and see which pins drop down though

I can remember finding a good article on here a few months back that d_b made (i think). It had heaps of good pictures of the different states a pin could be in and also talked about how to feel the difference in sets. I just had a quick look but haven't managed to find it yet, maybe someone who can remember what it is called can steer you in the right direction. It is deffinetly worth a read. Il have a better look tonight for you and post the link if i find it.
