Hi I am new to locking, And I stumbled on to this site and it looks like it is perfect for my interest, lock picking has always fascinated me. I would like to make my own tools if that is advisable but I Don't want to create a monster.
I hope I can find advice on methods and materials needed. and maybe someone could steer me to the right thread.
I am older than dirt so I will need to learn fast

Introducing myself:

35 years old. I've always been interested in locks/lockpicking, but only recently I've started to learn picking. I'm still a newbie, only picked a few simple locks so far.

It seems you have a lot of useful and interesting information, I hope someday I'll be advanced enough myself, to contribute and share the knowledge.

Especially I'm interested to learn how to make my own tools, far more exciting than getting a ready-made set

What's happening? Real name is Pete live down here in FLorida!
Was always fascinated with lock picking since I was younger, 49 now, but really getting into it lately.
Purchased a little beginners pick kit and also made some nice picks too.
Bought an 11 key bump key set and playing around with that also.
Just love reading all the info here! Can't wait to get more proficient but not at all unhappy with my skills so far! LOL

I was introduced to locks & locksmithing by way of, a rekeying kit, 1 tensioner and 1 HPC hook pick. This was in 1974... I was 14 yrs old, and my parents just bought an old fasoined hardware store. A salesman gave me a five minute tutorial with the pick in "Raking" a lock open and how to re-key Kwiksets for customers. I've taken one 4 hour class in Dallas for rekeying Kwicksets & Schlages.

We finally closed the hardware store and I found I like being self employed. I recently moved to a small town with NO locksmith, but there is a guy with a car opening gig. The drive to the nearby metro is too far for an ordinary job, So I'm taking the Foley-Belsaw course through the mail, hoping to start a small business out of my home.

I've been a member here for a few weeks and doing a lot of reading before posting. Thanks to the great forum here, I've created 2 snap guns 2 double tensioners and five picks, with different luck on different locks.

I'm really amazed at how easy and gratifying it is to make my own picks, and they work. I'm sad to say I have a ordinary Kwikset tylo that being very difficult indeed, although almost all my other locks have fallen prey to the new guy with a lock pick.
I hope to do a lot more reading here and might even post every now and then, have a great day all, Thanks for the great site - Gadget

Greetings folks, I've been a working, full time locksmith, safe tech, and alarm tech for 26 years. I specialize in master-key systems, new lock installations, and safe work, including safe deposit and vaults. There are new challenges every day. I have picked thousands of locks I imagine, but I still take them one at a time.

I've looked around this site some, and am pleased that there seems to be a good line drawn between hobby, entertainment and breaking the law/s.

Early on as a locksmith, I took the motto serious and defend it just as serious. "We Have The Public's Trust". That is something in 26 years I've never compromised. I also understand the curiosity and mystery of locks. I picked my first padlock at age 10 with home-made picks. My dad was going to throw it away because he'd lost the keys. I'll never forget the feeling. 38 years later, there is still a portion of that feeling each and every time. When there isn't, I'll retire and do something else.

I'm a facilities mechanic at a large spam in the Kansas City area. (hundreds of key locks and electronic locks)

I took a locksmithing course back in 1978. I'm getting ready to take another one as a refresher.

I would like to take the time to say hello to everyone in the forum. I joined the forum about two weeks ago and like most of you have always been interested in locks and lockpicking. I find the site very informative and its great to be able to gain some knowlege from you guys.

I just purchased my 1st set of picks "Southord Slim 22 Piece set" and have already been successful with a few padlocks. I hope to learn more through time and look forward to chatting to a few of you. A friend of mine is a locksmith and has given me a few locks to practice on
