My First Real Set

Postby Jixz » 17 Nov 2007 2:51

If i were to buy a real set online, where would be my best bet? I'm not looking for a huge set, just something to get me into the hobby a little more. Ive looked around and found a few that I think I like, tell me what you guys think about them and send me some of your favorites.:

Basic set.
I doubt these are very good, but cool idea
Like the variety!
Kickpick

Thanks In Advance!

When you're first starting out, you should stick to a standard set like the one in your first link. The compact sets like the credit card kit and the keychain one are very convenient in that they're portable, but it's important that you get the full feeling when you first start picking locks, and the more traditional picks like your first link help with this. Don't go for a more portable set until you're comfortable picking locks with standard ones.

I personally like the picks from http://www.lockpicktools.com. Their 8-piece ripple-handle set (PRH-8) is a good starting set and much cheaper at $13.95.

Sorry, the name of the pick set is PRH-8. Stupid smileys... :)

I agree fully...get the first set.
They will give you much more feel when picking...the others I feel personally are a bit gimicky...just picks differently packaged.

Yeah the first set is fine, for all the picks I have, I largely use the hook that comes in that set for most of my picking.
Be sure to check out the sponsor shop lockpickshop.com as they offer a discount to members here, so it may be cheaper.

One thing that i REALLY like about the key chain one is its Car Pick and its Jiggler Pick. Are these complete waists? or is there a set that may include these? and on www.lockpickshop.com what do i need to do to get the savings from the forums?

I'd still stick with the first set...it's ideal for a beginner and you could still pick cars with it anyway, after you first get proficient at picking...
But if you did want to pick cars later on...I'd get a wishbone tension wrench and maybe a set of southord auto jigglers, or even buy a few more single picks, such as a few different rakes.
Goodluck whatever you decide to get anyway!

Yup, just go with that first set, and forget about auto locks for the moment!
That could land you in a whole lot of trouble, that ain't as simple as you may think, you could do some real damage if you decide to have a go.

I think the promo code is lp101, and you enter that at the checkout when placing your order, it's a 10% or so discount.

The first set looks good, stick with the simple picks with the reinforced handles if your new to this game as I have found these to be nice and comfortable for somebody who is just starting to take up lockpicking.
