Can't shim padlock, abus

Postby GPGT1 » 23 Nov 2007 18:18

Ok so at my shop we don't pick padlocks usualy we just cut and replace, so anyway I'm trying to shim them but all we carry in stock is ABUS are they shimable? I havn't opened one yet, my shims all break.

you should be able to shim them unless they use ball bearings to lock the shackle.
ABUS are quite well made locks so the shims won't have much space to move, this is probably breaking them.
also, make sure your using a shim on each end of the shackle as all the abus i've come across are locked at each side.

why not just pick them instead?

I could pick them, they are the rekeyable type, they are the double ball bearing though. I was mostly wondering why I couldn't get this shiming thing.

You can't shim a double ball bearing lock.
It's a good day when I learn something new.

you can't shim them then.
as you can see in this pic, the locking balls won't budge unless the plug is turned
