LED light on pick

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

LED light on pick

Postby raimundo » 24 Nov 2007 12:14

I have in the past produced a pick with an led light on it, it was a loop handle type, but I just looked at the newsparkling site and saw some auto pick tools, they are at the top of the first page, about sixth in the row, if you click on the photos, you will see that they have an led light held into the pick with shrink tube. this is a simple and elegant design.

:D It would work easily into some of locknewbies shrinktube handles. :D

If you have looked at some of the tiny keychain led lights, usually there is no real switch, just the legs of the led and a pressure plate to touch them to the button battery

Just something to think about especially for those who enjoy making fancy picks. Usually if you try a good idea a few times, you will improve the design. led lights do not need the large handles that are on the auto tools in the new sparkling site, they usually can be fitted with one or two button batteries.

I think that's a great idea.

this sounds like an interesting concept, but i was thinking that the led might illuminate the keyway more clearly on the tension wrench, where it probably wouldnt shake as on the pick

My question:

Would this really help much? Other than seeing the first pin, what exactly are you illuminating and does it aid in picking at all?

I dunno... lock picking has just never been a visual thing for me, excepting of course visualization.

If you are a professional locksmith who does a lot of home lockout calls at night like I do it may help a lot. Usually what I have to do is hold a Streamlight pen light in my mouth to illuminate the locks while I am picking.

I think the new Cobra EEZ Reader to decode car locks have something like this too now.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

in the dark

Postby raimundo » 26 Nov 2007 11:40

when its dark it just reassures you that you havent put the pick and tensor in well and you may see the plug move.

Great Idea.

Also it will allow you to see down a lock to see any obstruction of extra security feature... example, your an idiot and can't see the everest mark on the schalge in front of you, you can no see the check pin

I usually just wear a headlamp when picking in the dark. It's not attached to a hardhat, and doesn't look like something the Village People might wear, but it works nicely. It is LED, really small, and doesnt need to be mounted on a pick. The batteries pretty much never run out.( except once when i left them on for almost 2 weeks). In fact, it looks exactly like this. http://www.rei.com/product/751757

I also wear gloves, a ski mask, and ..... just kidding :)

For my lighting, I have a 3 watt luxeon LED.. yea a little to much maybe  that I rigged to clip onto my hat.

It's useful for picking at night, but most people tend to leave there porch lights on.

However, just to be an arse.. i will wear the hat to where at night and look rediculous, but hey if they last, with a 3 watt luxeon I can just return the gesture and blind them

Yuepp L.E.D's are fun

So it's barely 6am and I still didn't have any coffee, so let me rephrase that.

Sometimes i will clip the light onto my hate if where going somehwere at night, turn it on to look stupid becuase the thing is rediculously bright. And who ever dare questions my L.E.D will reiceve a blow of light to the face equivilant in pain to that of being kicked in the nuts.

Okay, time for coffee..

mounting an led on your pick would really depend on your picking style. most of the time i'll try a rake first, which you don't really need a light for, and would probably wind up looking like a light show with the led bouncing around with the light going everywhere but the key hole. then if i have to settle down for spp, i'll start off with a half-diamond, and then a short hook. so that's 3 leds. hmmm, if my dentures will hold up, i'm going to stick with a mag-lite held cigar-fashion in my mouth.
