lock styles?

lock styles?

the thing is people i have been picking locks since i was like 12 and well i always have used home made lock picks that i have made myself with a bunch of small files, a large file, a mini vice, and any kind of thin and long metal i could find normaly i would use the metal from a car window wipper or some knife or something from the kitchin my mum used to go skits lol. anyway i always use the same style lockpick whitch is a rake i have made other styles in lock picks i just dont really understand where to use them on i mostly open padlocks and bikelocks but i will soon move on to door locks if anyone could point me in the right direction of whitch kind of picks to use i would be gratfull

I would suggest you read the MIT guide. Once you understand single pin picking, pick selection will become obvious.

If I were you, I'd go grab a Kwikset deadbolt from home depot for $10 and use a short hook or half diamond style pick. Start with 2 pins and work up to 5.

Just an FYI, you will probably be unable to find a Kwikset in the UK. From what I have read, it appears that Bird and Mila cylinders are rather easy to pick and should be good learning tools. Stay FAR away from Yale until you are experienced. For more information on UK practice locks, check out Quin's thread of the same name in the European lock forum.
