Practice Board

Postby rwp42 » 16 Nov 2007 11:35

I spent all night last night mounting about half my locks into a piece of 2x8 redwood. I cut the board to 5', then mounted the door locks at proper door lock height (36" to centerline). I mounted the rest of the locks above it for convenience. The back has a length of chain bolted in that I have attached many of my padlocks to for practice. The final touch was adding a ring to each side to hold the keys for the front and back respectively. Pics:

Thanks! I left some room for expansion... I have three automotive ignition locks that I am not sure I want to mount yet (they would be hard to mount, and they might be more useful unmounted). I have several more mortise cylinders that will go in once I have back plates for them. Fun with power tools! ;-)

Dang, good idea. I've been wanting to make a practice board for a while but haven't wanted to sit down and figure out how I wanted it laid out. I think I might use your design as a starting point. I like how you did the padlocks too.

For an auto lock you might want to drill a hole in the wood with a hole saw, screw a piece of sheet metal over the hole and mount it on the sheet metal, assuming it's a door or trunk lock.

You did a great job! My practice board is *much* smaller with only 1 deadbolt - but I love your layout and design much better.

stp1stp -

Funny you should mention that. As soon as I finished the board, my first thought was to see how fast I could pick them all. ;-) Unfortunately, I have not had the free time to sit down and do it all at once. I'll have to time myself over the holiday weekend.
