CutAway Lock Question!

Postby Diphoration » 2 Dec 2007 22:34

Hello! I'm about to order a CutAway lock to practice and visualise how locks work, and I was wondering... What is the difference between a Schlange and a Kwikset? is it just the quality? Both are Right Handed Cut Away with 5 pins... but the Schlange cost about 10$ more... is it worth it?

heres the link
Schlange - http://www.lockpickshop.com/PCYX5SCH-R.html
Kwikset - http://www.lockpickshop.com/PCYX5-R.html

(When they say right handed, it's the picking hand right?)

Schlage locks generally have better tolerances than kiwkset however thats just a Schlage keyway so its just different warding. The right handed refers to what side of the lock the cutaway is on so imagine how you will hold it and order from there.

Like mentioned above, the cylinders in your links are made by the same manufacturer but with different keyways.
So no, the one with the Schlage keyway is not worth the extra $$$.

You can get those cylinders really cheap and make your own cut away with a file.

I actually have the Schlage cutaway that is shown. It is great for demonstrations for new people but picking it is a little different then when I pick a real one. You can tell that the cylinders are a little loose.

I have made my own that shows less, it just shows the pins and it still feels tighter.
