I made these picks using a dremel with hair pins, street cleaners, and windshield wipers. :!:

Nice job. Don't forget to finish them off with 2000 grit sand paper. Makes it look like chrome. 8)

The shapes and the selection of profiles look good. Think about maybe some heat-shrink tubing for handles - or anything to beef them up without totally ruining the feedback of the pick. It looks like it might be hard to control the picks without much to hold on to.

Yes they are in fact homemade.

Good work there. As stated, give them a good sanding working your way up from 400 to 600 then 800, etc. You want to get them as smooth as possible. That way they glide through the lock and give you much better feedback than even commercial picks.

For reference on how smooth you need to get, take a look around the forums and find some pictures of the picks made by raimundo, kaotik, or lowknewbie21. They all make some of the finest home brew picks that money can buy. There are many others on the site that make very high quality picks also but naming them all would turn this into a very long post.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

comb

Postby raimundo » 14 Dec 2007 10:54

that forth pick from the right when looked at in the expanded image, at first I thought it might be a comb pick, but I think you may not be clear on the concept of the 45 degree angles such as seen on keys for lifting pins, that pick could easily become jammed in a tight keyway.
