Great, thanks. I haven't played with this tool yet but could I not just start with the longest pins on ALL 5 levers & work my way down? I realise it would take longer but is it not possbile this way?
I help people out by helping them in.:)

It is possible yeah but it's far quicker and easier to take impression first.

also, If you employ this meatod, don't use much tension as it has been know to trap the P&C. this is ok on the bench as you can undo the lock cap, do this on the door and you will bend/break he pick.

You've been warned!

The interpretation of the impressions left by the 144 are different from those left by the 114E (fewer groups). By taking impressions you are reducing the number of possible combinations and, in theory, reducing the time it takes to identify the corect pin/lever.

However, it is possible with all P&C's just to use them as pure P&C and work down from the No 1 pin and I know some very competent lockies who prefer this method. The reason for the two types of pins is for the different type of 114 that was issued and has nothing to do with the 114E on which you shoud be using the New 114 Pins.

Any P&C or decoder tool takes time to master and effort spent in the workshop wil be rewarded by less time and possible damage to tools on the door but, a note of caution, this type of tool is not for the sport/amatuer lockpicker and is a serious investment.
