Once they are filed down, they might have burred over the top of the plate, so maybe drilling them once you have filed them would make it a lot easier. That, or file them so they have a flat bit, then centre punch them and drill them. But remember only to drill them a little bit, because all you have to do is get the head of the rivet off.

I've done this a few times, after grinding them down, I had to use a nail and hammer to get the rivets pushed through.

A vice comes in handy, or your brothers hand :)

Step one. push the plastic band up to the top
Image[img]
step two. your gonna have to cut/grind off these rivets
Image
you can use a dremel or a bench grinder
Image
grind off all of them like this
Image
Now use a flat head screwdriver or a small chisel to remove the first metal plate
Image
use a hammer for assistance
Image
now you can take out the lock
Image
you can also unlock the padlock with a screwdriver

Nice. We just did this at work in the shop. The bench grinder made quick work of the rivets, and then a hammer and screwdriver popped the bottom plate right off. It took like 3 minutes.

Turns both ways. :o

Nice guide. Thanks for saving me the time. I have been away for awhile and busy, so thanks again for making this.

p.s. you might want to copy that and put it in a new thread labeled "guide to taking apart a master #3". So it will be easier to find for those looking for it.
