Kwikset deadbolt disassembly

Postby ADDBoy » 28 Jun 2004 21:56

I can't for the life of me figure out how to take this Kwikset apart. It's the cheapest deadbolt you can buy, made for mobile homes I believe. Apparently there's supposed to be some screw that removes the plug, but the problem is I think it's covered by this long black protuding bar which connects to the locking mechanism on the other side of the door. I took that off and all that's left is the black bar, but it won't budge :|

Any ideas?

there is a retaining clip on the back of the plug. it is hard to see but if you look all around it you will see the ends of it. you need to pull it off then insert your key and turn 90 degrees and the plug should come out but bee carefull as the top pins and springs will also come out if you dont use a plug follower.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Why don't you just take the top clip off? True you have to be careful not to launch springs everywhere, but a Kwikset's clip is so easily removed and put back on, I think it's the path of least resistance.

Actually I did that when I was trying to put the thing back together and realized I couldn't get the springs back in the holes any other way :P Looks like a much easier method, and the top basically snaps back on. I was just wary of touching it at first, because I didn't know how fragile it was.

just as a side.. if you plan to use the bolt on a door squeeze the black clip a lil before replacing it or you'll go to use the key one day ( if you still do once you become a master at pciking :-P ) or if someone else will go to use it and the plug will come out
