Ok, I'm working on a Schalge SC-4, and I'm maneuvering the pick around, and I'm having trouble setting the last two pins, so I want to pull the pick out. On my way out, the lock falls open. How in the world did I pull this wonderful stunt?

Could have had the last two pins up too far and as you retracted your pick they fell down to the right spot. A lot of times i find a lock will open by just barley touching the pins that are sticking.

a couple of things may have happened:

You had set all pins except one or two closer to the entry which you
bumped on the way out, causing it to set and the lock to open.

you had pushed a pin or pins up too far (overset) and when you withdrew
your pick you also released tension somewhat and they dropped down
(you reverse picked without knowing it).

while picking the back pin, the tang of your pick was holding up some of
the pins closer to the entryway and removing your pick allowed them to
drop to the correct depth.

or any combination of the above.

use light tension - if you think it's light enough, reduce it further - it seems
counter intuitive sometimes but it helps you feel better especially if you're
holding it in your hands and not in a vice.
Oh look! it's 2016!
