Hello - I'm new and looking for advice

Postby project4spain » 20 Jan 2008 19:22

Hello All

My name is Kev and i'm based in Spain (Brits abroad). I'm currently working as a security consultant and operative and have now reached a cross roads in life where I want a change of direction and to put some roots down. I'm currently working everywhere but where I want to be.

I have been looking at locksmithing for quite some time and have researched various training providers and think I know who I will go with for my professional training needs.

What I want to ask though is, are there any home study tutorials that I could complete before going on a proper structured course. I'm currently working away and would like to study in my spare time until I am ready to take a full course. I read about the foley belsaw course but I believe that this is only available in the USA? Is there a similar course available to European/Brit students.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Regards

Kev

Foley-Belsaw WILL accept students outside the USA. They just charge more for shipping, and you have to pay the whole tuition at once. The price they quoted me was US$1049 to Belize, Central America. I don't know what it would be to Spain. I thought it was pretty good considering that you get a "starter" key duplicator and enough tools, locks, etc., to complete the course. You then send your tests and such back to them all at one time.

They were also willing enroll me for the regular rate and to send everything to an exporter in Los Angeles who makes regular shipments to Belize at a much better rate. It will take about six weeks to get here, but I'll save enough to buy some additional tools and supplies.

I found them very helpful to deal with, and the feedback I have seen from former students is WAY above 90% positive.

I have seen the FB course and it is an ok beginner course. I think you can learn just as much online by reading threw forums. A hands on class will teach you much more and be well worth the cost whatever it is. I had to take a some vacation time time to take a proper class, but it was worth every penny.

Thanks Guys

Thanks Guys

My intention is to do a complete residential and auto locksmith course but in the mean time whilst i'm currently working elsewhere, i was toying with the idea of the home study modules so as to build up some basic knowledge before attending a course. I'm a bit sceptical of some of the claims of the training providers that they can train you up from novice to a required standard in a week. I've undergone many training courses in my time for various things, i think i've found some good guys though.

I'll enrol with FB in the mean time though, If nothing else, but for an insight into the job and to see if i actually like it.

I'm sure I will, having been involved in Security of one form or another for years.

Thanks again for your advice from across the pond.
