Lock picking in movie "Gone in 60 Seconds"

ahahah has anyone seen "Gone in 60 Seconds" when nick cage get the last car and starts the car by picking the lock with a tension tool and a what looks to be like a rake

i'm sure its fake in the movie, but older car ignitions were generally pretty easy to pick.

In many movies or T.V. shows where people pick locks they dont even have a tension wrench. Only movie that i've seen where someone looks like they are doing it right is Mission Impossible 2. The girl is using what looks to me a feather touch tension wrench and maybe a rake or snake pick....or maybe a half diamond...

I recently rented a movie called "Foolproof" which is about some kids who are basicly burglers with a concience. Anyway- I was amazed at how accurate the lock picking was. Tension wrench- and pick. And when they showed it he was moving the pick up and down as if to raise and lower the pins. A few times they even comment on how "Hey, it usually takes you thirty seconds to pick this lock. And we're going on 4 minutes... what's up?" so they talk about the time it takes to pick a lock. It was an entertaining movie- pretty low budget but I enjoyed it.

Even Edward Nortons approach in The Score is correct. He uses a standard pick and tension wrench on a filing cabinet lock. Although they don't show the scene in detail, it looks pretty much correct. The tech advisor for the movie is supposed to be a guy 'well known' for that type of lifestyle and techniques.

Many years ago, when I worked for a sanfranciso lockshop, (Cerny's 10th and missions st.) We were called to a movie set, (one of those sidney poiters sequels to "in the heat of the night") Our job was to remove the bolt that locked the cam that pulled back the bolts on a huge vault door. So Sidney or someone could look at the dial, squint, put his ear to the door and make mouth pursing like he was concentrating, then spin the dial any way at all and get it on the first try.

In Referance to Gone in 60 seconds... There is no proof that a key is being used.. also.. Have you ever looked at what happens when you start yer car.. ? the key stays in the "start engine" position or "Just slightly before" So in theory.. He could still start the car without the key or re-picking the lock..

Most of the lock in picking/by-passing was "pretty" realistic.

The funniest part was when the black guy is stealing the car... and he has a pickgun with an lcd screen.

He watches the screen clicking the gun til the "scanner" gets the code, then the key turns.

I'm assuming it was supposed to be a transponder bypass or something.

thats the thing - pick into the 'on' position, and then turn to start.

it stays 'on'...and it doesnt relock until they ignition is turned to off.

so he could keep twisting from 'on' to 'start' as much as he wanted.
