Becoming a full time locksmith.

Becoming a full time locksmith.

Postby Beyond » 4 Feb 2008 21:51

Next month will mark my 6th month as a locksmith apprentice. I have worked part time up until this point(Mon-Wed-Fri, 8-5) and have seriously begun to debate talking to the boss for a possible chance to move into a full time spot or at least request to make a little bit more money.

I've never been a second late, and I've only missed one day (after catching a small cold because I worked outside two straight days with them in the blistering cold digging a trench to lay conduit for a CCTV setup). All the locksmiths I've rode with have had favorable things to say about me to the boss. I can't think of any negative things hindering my chances except my experience level.

My question is: Is this request a little too soon or might I get somewhere with my boss by asking him for "more responsibilities"? In other words, what is my best bet here?

The shop has become active again and we're genuinely full with jobs every day, I figure now is a better time than ever.

Any help from locksmiths would be greatly appreciated.

I would avoid asking for more money. Alot of shops do not take the time to take on an aprentice. You have been given a great chance to learn. Asking for more responsibility is great but be prepared to do more work for the same money.

Well I talked to him yesterday, avoiding the money issue of course. He seemed very confident in my work there. Told me he wouldn't have kept this far into it if he didn't think I'd be useful for the company. Also confirmed that he wanted to give me a career in this, which I was very relieved to hear.

I recently graduated college and told him despite the degree(IT) and potential to make more money, I would rather be doing this. He pretty much agreed with that and told me that the locksmiths at the shop make a very decent living out of it. Won't go into numbers but the number he told me was far beyond what I ever saw on the internet according to stuff such as Salary.com.

Didn't really discuss much of full time although he talked about it being a possibility in the near future, although the pay wouldn't increase, but that's not why I wanted full time. If you can put in 5 days instead of 3, you're nearly doubling the amount of time, effort, and labor involved with learning the trade.

Thanks Freak.
