Doorknob disassembly

I was wondering how one would go about disassembling a doorknob such as this one:

I would like to re-pin it.
I think it might come apart easily by bending the 4 metal parts at the top of the picture.
However, I really don't want to do it this way.
Is there any other way?
And what is that hole in the side of the knob?

When it is unlocked leave the key in there then turn the knob and there is a small hole on the side. Stick a paper clip or pick in it and press it in and pull on the knob, and it should slide off. You will see the lock housing, bible and back of the plug. Wiggle it out and it should fall right out or if the bible is springy it may need to be depressed to slide out of the knob. I hope this helps.

Here are some pictures, I used my tool to point to the hole that needs to be depressed and the bible which may be collapsable, most likely it isn't.

thanks a bunch... but what do i do now? i think it's stuck, do i need to destroy the outer casing?

You don't need to destroy the outer casing. Just use some needle nose pliers to line up the shell and remove it from the knob.

Thanks a bunch! I was sitting here with, I think, the EXACT same door knob. I'd already tried bending the little tabs assuming that was what needed to be done... then I looked it over... found the little hole that exposed an opening when the knob was unlocked and turned, figured it had something to do with it, stuck a pick in, moved the knob a little... then gave up and came here to look for the answer.

I need to learn a little more patience it seems.

Okay, am I mentally deficient? Do I need pin-point accuracy on a target I'm not seeing? Can this lock not be re-keyed?

I'm just using a simple Dorex lock set, and I have the two knobs seperated, unlocked, and I've tried to depress, move, pry and slide every ledge I can see in there. Yes I have it turned to the position that can only be reached when it's unlocked, and there are a couple of interlocking grooves and such in this little recess down there, but nothing I seem to try is popping this handle off. Or moving anything, really. I've tried brute force, a delicate touch to feel out movement, and I'm getting nowhere.

Help me before I take an angle grinder to this poor, innocent door knob!

Only with a keyway in the centre, and the fact that it's only a Dorex.

Oh...wait. I got it. I had to remove the spring and the little disc that stops you from turning the knob only so far to expose a few different slots.

And then pull it apart with some serious force. Stupid thing was probably more stuck than anything. I've noticed that locksmiths on the whole are far less delicate than you see in the movies.
