Abloy Protec Oval Cutaway

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Abloy Protec Oval Cutaway

Postby n2oah » 12 Mar 2006 19:35

I haven't made a cutaway in a couple of weeks, so I picked up my Protec oval cylinder and started sawing. It's not finished yet, but I still felt inclined to share it. It will, most likely, be auctioned off when I can either obtain a key or key the lock to one of my other protec keys.

I haven't been working on the Protec lately since there is nothing to do on it. Skold, the profile of my lock is the H profile. I don't have any other locks with the same profile so I'm screwed if I can't get a key cut. I've been trying to decode the disks, but with no success.
I also like how you cut away that DiskLock Pro.

cutaway

Postby timelord » 14 Apr 2006 6:22

Is there a guide to making cutaway locks somewhere around here. I would love to have one for a good lock, but so far have only made cutaway locks from cheap ones that have much easier metal to cut.

I see those giant ball bearings from time to time inside locks. I know they are some type of security measure. But could someone tell me specifically what they do?

n2oah, I know all to well how difficult it is making a cutaway on a disk lock. Your precision is outstanding, and cuts are perfectly strait. I don't know how you do it.

Gelmar, the giant ball bearings are are security measure alright. They are for keeping the shackle secured when it is locked.

Yes, I realize that but what makes them better than a normal clasp. Are they more shim proof? Or do they help prevent something else. I mean why balls? I don't understand! HELP ME!!?!

Sorry for the double post here but I left something out.

I only ever see them in "Higher security" padlocks. What makes them better? Thats what I'm trying to get at.

Spring loaded hasps can be shimmed, bounced, pulled, ect. They just generally suck.

Ball bearings suffer from none of these flaws. To bypass them you'll typically end up slotting the face of the lock, and turning the spring loaded obstruction manually; or drilling out the obstruction all together.

I need to go back to school. I can't remember proper terminology any more. :(

They also offer tremendously good pulling strength, which is the primary reason they are used on good locks.

The ones in the keyway are like a ward to make decoders more difficult to design, without the downside of weakening the key at low cut locations.

The reason they are added to locks is patent extension whoring.

The reason why those are added is because you can brake the lock with the key if it is not inserted all the way in before turning. Abloy Disklock was discontinued because of this and Disklock Pro introduced.

What comes to making decoders harder to design, well, those doesn't work like that ;) Can't say anything more as this is not advanced area.

For n2oah, those are some pretty impressive cutouts. You probably use proper milling machine, atleast for the padlock that is in half? :)

Nope, the only thing I use for my cutaways is a dremel and some modified files. :)
