Ramped (raker) Pick

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Ramped (raker) Pick

Postby Kayvon » 15 Feb 2008 19:05

Does anyone have any experience with the Ramped Pick from lockipcktools.com? It's the second from the right:

I order some picks from them a while back and they sent me a ramped pick instead of a snake. (They later sent me a snake and made everything okay.)

But while I've found a good use for every other pick I ordered, I haven't made the ramped pick useful? Does anyone use this pick or one like it?

I have the same problem man. Whenever I need to rake I just use the pick thats fourth one from the right. That ramped rake never did work out for me either.

If you file down the the tip to where it can enter and exit a lock well its a fairly... good pick i suppose.

As the pick is it's useless in more than most apps.

However if you grind or file the front to a nice slope, it will be able to be used.

Would it be more effective if it was shaped the other way round? (the thickest part near the handle)

unramp it

Postby raimundo » 18 Feb 2008 13:12

you can unramp it easily, by grinding off the backside of the pick tip till the whole thing is close to the width of the narrow neck before the picktip. the thing would then be able to duck down under some pins and still be able to angle up and do whatever it was designed to do.

If you are designing picks, this one as it is, is an example of a tool that is just waiting to get permanently jammed in the lock.

It is a very good pick. It works great in any fairly open keyway like a Kwikset. Very fast, very effective. Just practice with it. Place the pick in the keyway before the tension wrench, once the lock is picked you will not be able ot remove the pick until you relock the lock.

I think I'll just stick with the other picks I'm more used to. My ramped rake will be a good pick to modify if I ever think up a unique design.

A-ha! I knew the shaft/handle part was thicker for a reason. Just couldn't piece it together.

I want to get one of these now, just to see how it works.
I always avoided them before, but now I see a new love :P

after sitting here for about 15 minutes on a lock that normally takes me 30 seconds to open I finally got it open using it. I'm not a fan of it but had to give it a try there has to be a technique for it I haven't figured out yet.
