Master lock #5!!

this lock i cannot pick..

it looks like ur normal master lock. stamped #5. I CANT open it! i can do a #3,#21,#140 but nooo not a #5. any suggestions? tips?tricks? advice? thanks!

I have an old #5 as well. It is rather difficult for me too. I can rake it relatively easy with and S/snake rake but single pin picking it is hard. On mine I have to use very very light tension on the wrench. I mean I'm pretty much only putting enough tension on it to keep my finger in contact with it, extremely light.

This lock seems to be made with tighter tolerances than many of the other master locks I have. When I get a pin set the plug rotation is so minimal it's almost imperceptible. I don't know if this is common to the model or if I just have a well made one.

Keep trying, you'll get it.

i swear to god there are spools. i broke my snake rake in it earlyer today.. the first pick outta my set.. the nice one too.. oh well part of the gig....

Im sure it just got stuck or something but still, calm down go get that other lock you love to open all day long with no problem *insert lock here* stop and go make a sandwich or somthing and come back to the #5, sit there and think about what gets you where in the lock and go from there, trust me you WILL open it just don't worry about it too much and you will open it faster.

lol im not sure what happend. i just started raking.. pulled the pick out and the head was gone! i wasint pissed at all lol.

i always do that. i can sit for hours with a master lock #3 and just *dink* its open

Odd that you should have difficulty with this. I got the impression from what I read that the Number 5s have the exact same cylinders as the Number 3s. The 5s don't have any security pins, but the 140s do. It's possible that you just lucked out with it . Perhaps the poorer oversight in producing consistently machined locks just worked against you this time. Might be an odd pin combination or something. I think I agree with what was said earlier: perhaps you just need to take a step back from the lock and come back to it a little bit later. How old is this lock? How was it treated? Is it rusty?

i broke down.. went to h0me depot and bought a new one.. the diferents is.. that lock is new.. my #5s are old..

IM LIKE !1 i can do security pins! but no #5s!?!?!?/

Lube up the old lock with graphite and exercise it a bit with the key (or a rake)... Just make sure it is nice and free.

I find #5's to be quite tolerant to different tensions but just start light. There are 4 pins so apply your tension and hit each one with a hook. if each one offers you no response then go a little bit heavier on the tension. Once you get one to set, hold that tension. There isnt much disparity between the hight that you have to set each pin to so I like to use a short hook or even a mellow half diamond.

lol, I know what you mean. I have an old one as well. It's tough but I can get it. I've only opened it about 10 times total now. Is there any difference between the ones with the yellow 'boot' (the plastic/rubber around the bottom of the lock with the master logo that all their laminated padlocks have) on the bottom vs the ones with the blue 'boot'? Mine has a yellow boot but most of hte ones I've seen in stores and in pictures here are blue.

oh man thats a bummer. Have you lubed it yet? Also try smacking it gently to mildly hard against something just in case some of the pins are stuck. I have done this before and it helps a bit.
