this is my first post put i have been lurking and learning from the site. I have no trouble with #3 masterlocks, kwikyset titans, and this gun lock i have but i an having the darnedest time with this cheap chinese knockoff of a masterlock that just says china and 40mm on the bottom and hardened on the bolt. I am also having trouble with a brinks r70 and a buffo 28st/70. Any tips i suspect the two round locks (dont really know how to describe them) are kinda out of my league at this point but still...

Thanks,
Ethan

The china ones are really crappy and can be as bad as any to open...if it opens to the left, for some reason they like to open easier.
Not saying it helps to open easy locks but just so you know...

What kind of picks are you using?

Funny you bring this up. I just bought a lock today on the way home from work that sounds exactly like what you describe. I bought it as a CVS Pharmacy store brand padlock. I'm sure it is sold under countless brand names though.
I am having a hard time with this one too (if it turns out to be the same lock). My problem is that the ward near the bottom of the keyway is relatively small and because of that I don't have a tension wrench that fits it well. No matter which wrench I use from my set it ends up rubbing on the inside of the lock cylinder which makes it more difficult to turn, harder to apply accurate tension, and kills feedback. I need to make a wider tension wrench before playing with this one anymore.

I'll go take a couple of pictures and see if it's the same one.

similar but not exactly. I am using a homemade snake rake, Pointy finger thing, 2 different tension wrenches and a half diamond. the key hole looks like the picture but without the little divet cut thing that the key has a notch for, but it has the big one in the same spot. I bought it at GI joes a few months back for around 10 bucks i think dont see any name on it

That looks very familiar indeed, it looks very much like the second padlock I bought (The first was a master 160 which i've only just managed).

The primary problem with this was that I was using cheap unpolished toold to begin with, I was also being far too rough with the lock.

The result was that I scraped the living daylights out of the pins and keyway.

This in turn made the pins bind like a goodun. Also I suspect that I didn't do the springs any good either.

I resolved this by squirting loads of WD40 into the lock and leaving it in a jar for a couple of days, this lubed up the damaged pins and made them slide a bit smoother. However in essence the locks knackered. It's not even good enough to try and make a cut-awat from.

Incidentally I found that it's better to get a small tension wrench and place it in the top of the keyway rather than the bottom!

Hope this helps in some way.

Paul
