McColl Method of Impressioning Lever Locks

Anybody heard of "The McColl Method of Impressioning Lever Locks"? I was given a copy of the pdf but it's password protected.

Is it worth buying?

I don't know if it's worth buying but somewhere here in these pages I saw lever lock impressioning instructions that were good enough to help me make a workable key for an antique bedroom door. A former co-worker has a really old house that she wanted to turn into a bed and breakfast. She felt (rightfully so) that leaving the authentic locks in place would add to the character. I'm sure the key I made up looks nothing like the original, but it works and it's not too terribly ugly.



If you do splurge for it, let us know if it's any good. I'm always looking for interesting stuff to read on the commuter bus to freak out the other riders.

I ended up getting the pw for the .pdf. It's a very good guide but sadly, none of the info seems to apply to my lock.

Here's why:

Yes i am also depressed when i saw that it does not working on my locks

Why you want do that?

to open the lock, or to have key for your lock?

Because is much more easy to make a key, if you take off the lock from the door.

sometimes i open levers locks with impressioning, but the key open the lock but don't close, some times i pick the levers but i can't open the lock, i take off the key and i open the lock with a wrench because the levers are set.

when that arrives a take off the lock and i make one other key.

Just mark coat the bit of the blank with a marker. Then stick the blank in the keyway and put torque on it in both directions as if you were using the right key. Remove blank from lock and you'll have areas of the marker worn away by contact with the levers and wards. Slowly proceed to file away those areas repeating the first steps of marking and turning the blank in the lock until you have a working key. That's all there is to it.

Are we talking about lever locks or warded locks? Totally different beasties. And who is this McColl fellow? Do you have his full name or at least initial?

I believe it is an older book by Ian McColl.
