If you have never picked a lock before, you should have your father dial his usual tow truck guy, I'm sure he has one, my dad was in the car business too. He'll unlock it for $20 and save you from possibly breaking a car lock. and normal lockpicks for house locks and padlocks won't usually work with car door locks, they're a different animal.

Are the keys locked in the car? if they keys are lost, you may need a new VATS key made by a real locksmith, not something most tow truck operators can do in the field.

good luck

in these parts I would never EVER recommend getting a tow truck driver to do a locksmiths' job. Bad Things Can Happen.

I think they can at least unlock the car.

Ok.. firstly, I'm afraid you won't be getting any info on opening cars in the public forums. Check the forum rules.

Secondly, I think you missed the point. The suggestion wasn't to get the car towed. The suggestion was that a tow truck driver is usually capable of opening the car for you, and often at a lower price than a locksmith.

Now, it's debatable as to whether you'll get the same level of expertise from a tow truck driver as you would a professional locksmith. On one hand, there are some real cowboys out there calling themselves locksmiths, and at the same time there are some very professional and skilled tow truck drivers. But as a general rule, I'd expect the locky to win out as far as skill and experience goes.

But then again, before I learned what I've learned, I've used tow truck drivers for lockout calls and I've never had a problem.

Hope that's of some help.

you should have seen the car i worked on this morning. The window was heavily scratched on the inside, the outer handle rod got disconnected and the inner lock switch rod got bent. There were about 200 very noticeable scratches around the lock/unlock button on the inside of the truck.

If it was my truck I would have been furious and probably wouldn't have settled for anything less than a new interior panel and tint unless i'd signed a waiver beforehand. To add insult to injury the customer had to pay me to reconnect his rods (incidentally it was a locksmith who was finally called in who got the truck open).

Not all tow truck drivers are bad at unlocking cars and not all locksmiths are good but I really don't think it's something so simple that anybody with a bag of tools can do it well and considering the value of a car I personally would definitely pay for somebody who has more expertise.
Anyways, not going for a topic hijack or anything but I would have thought on a forum like this that there would be a little more respect for the locksmith trade.

my dad had the same problem just a few days ago in fact, i found a template for car door locks, my dad lock the keys in our 2000 ford f-350 supercab. i got the wide wiper blade from the truck for a wrench and picked it open, took me a few hours cuz these locks are tough to pick, once i found the pick, i printed it on a laser printer and went to work making the pick

Normally when the admin or a mod says no information should be given in the open forum all members respect it. The new generation of LP101 members either does not respect this rule or does not know it.
