Picking fights with a house lock

I'm a newbie to the lock picking culture. I've aced padlocks and now moving on to bigger things, house locks. Locks on front doors of houses.

My kit: Uniball pen lid tongue. An epic home-made tension wrench.
Paperclip. A so so pick. Bends easily
Sun glasses leg. A great piece of kit. Can open a master lock on its own. Metal coated by a bobby pin-like housing.

I just can't get a house lock open. Is it my kit or technique.
P.S. I know they're not called house locks. I'm a newbie so I don't know terminology ;_;

I think the term you're looking for is "IN USE."

Two factors I've noticed in your post that'll make opening the lock more difficult:
-Being mounted on a door.
-Using picks that don't give good/much feedback.

P.S. The title you've chosen makes it sound like you're picking a fight with someone and using a lock as a weapon...

You could have gone with calling them deadbolts....or even doorknob locks, the way you have it listed sounds like you're doing something you shouldn't be

But about why you cant get them open...you haven't told us how you use the "picks" so we cant say its your technique.....but its more likely your equipment....

I'm not like trying to pick other people houses. Just my front door and side door. Is there a picture of the kit I should be using anywhere.

If you'll just browse this site you'll find hundreds and hundreds of photos of various types of lock picks and tension tools, both commercial and home-made.

You can also click on the flashing ad for http://www.lockpickshop.com on the left of the page and look at some of the commercial picks.

It seems that my tension wrench is too thick is there any thinner materials I can use for home-made tools

That narrows it down. those have only been in use for the past oh.... 200 years or so.

To summarize.

1. Make or buy some real picks.

2. Don't pick locks you might want to use. You should have dedicated practice locks.

3. It's easier to learn if you have the lock in your hand. Not mounted to a door.
