Newbie Master #3 ?

Postby kanecoach » 20 Mar 2008 11:40

Good morning!
I am completely new to this quite cool hobby. I mean really new. Anyway, I have read some stuff and watched some videos, and have been playing around with a couple masterlock #3s. Somewhere someone said "lotsof tension and rake hard"... Well that ain't working for me. It seems that I have to put almost no tension and almost feather a snake over some of these pins. Even when I do this, the lock won't open and when I let off the tension I hear all of the pinscome back down (hope this makes sense).

My question is,more tension? Less tension? Diffferert technique? Please bear with me as I will be here a while.
Peace,
Josh

sounds like you are just over setting some of the pins....you never really wanna use lots of tension or rake really hard because the steel in picks is harder than the brass in the locks and you will start to wear them out.

What are you using for picks? Home-mades?

Try using a Dyno Kwick pick and use the "ripping" technique. It works for me.

"Lots of Tension"?!?! "Rake hard"!?!?!

NONONONONONO

Get out your trusty hook, and start with as light of tension as possible. Like the amount you use to press a key on a keyboard.

Look around here for some tutorials on beginning picking. They'll go more indepth on theory for you.
