Key-retaining lock

Postby Pil » 29 Mar 2008 10:54

Hi

Lock: Some ABUS-padlock, 5pin. Nothing fancy with the key, so I assume the lock-mechanism is a pin-tumbler lock (quite a newbie here, sorry if I mix up the terms a bit). It says (8502 under the ABUS-logo on the key..not sure if that helps at all).

I was wondering about how you pick a key-retaining lock (I think that is the term for it, basicly the key is stuck in the padlock-keyhole until I relock the lock).
Now, if I pick this lock open, the lock will assume that the key is in the lock still, but can I assume that the pins in the lock are resting freely on the edge of the tube, so I can twist it back with just the tensiontool, or do I have to pick it in the opposite direction to re-lock it? I have forgotten the key a couple of times the past two weeks, and have wondered if I will break the lock (or if I will have problems re-locking it) if I pick it.

So:
1) Can a key-retaining padlock be picked
2) Can the padlock be re-locked after it is picked

Yes to both questions.

A "key retaining" padlock will prevent you from rotating the cylinder back to the "locked" position and removing the key until you lock the padlock again (e.g., until you close and re-lock the shackle). This is different than, say, a basic Master padlock: with those you can remove the key if the shackle is still open.

many of the better abus locks have a "z" thingy (forget the proper name) which lets the locksmith choose whether or not they are key-retaining.

Abloy is always key-retaining, some mtl is key retaining.

It's not uncommon, just that it's found more often on high-end locks.
