marso: Almost always I use colored pins when rekeying locks, but honestly, it doesn't take long for that coating to come off, and I generally don't worry myself about someone coming along and "reading" the lock. Reading pins and wafers is another speciality skill like picking that requires time, patience and practice that most simply do not make the time to do.
Additionally, a few times I have come across locks with pins that still have the coloring partially visible. I don't bother reading them though, I just tear 'em apart and rekey 'em or make new keys using depth keys as necessary.
Foil impressioning standard pin tumbler locks would be a waste a time for me. Simple impressioning would do the trick without be concerned about the additional material. This would go the same with most standard wafer locks as well.
In cases where a masterkey system is likely, it is potentially insecure to do impressioning of any kind simply because of the chance of impressioning a masterkey by accident.
Just some food for thought.
