this schlage lock is giving me problems

Postby lifesbreath » 13 Apr 2008 22:12

Hi
I've tryed alot of times to pick this lock but I'm getting no were. I'm a new to picking but the other locks I tryed weren't as hard as this. The key is cut like 0,3,0,2,0,3,1,5,0. Apart from the second to last I thought that I would beable to rake it , but I can't spp and rake. With Height 1 is more of a diamond but the others is flat.

Sorry about me grammer I'm abit topsie.

I'm lost. Try explaining it again. No schlage lock has 9 pins.

Seems to me he's counting the "peaks" and the "valleys" not just the valley's. Can you post a picture of the key? It may help us understand a little better. What you posted is not possible.

I think I get it - the lock has 4.5 pins, but with his double vision he thinks it's 9.

After re-reading your question several times I think what you are referring to is that there is a low-high-low pin configuration at the last three pins?

If so, it is still possible to rake it though you are correct that it will be more difficult. Your best bet is going to be SPP. Use a medium hook rather than a half diamond or short hook when aiming for that second to last pin. The binding order of the pins will make a difference here too. Don't focus on that high setting pin until it is the one binding. It's easy to fixate on that one pin when you know it's going to be a challenge but let it wait it's turn. If you're lucky, it will bind before the one in front of it, making life a little easier.

There is also the possibility that the pin configuration is not your problem at all. Spool pins are not at all uncommon in Schlage locks. The only way to know for sure if you're not accustomed to feeling the difference while picking is to take the cylinder apart and have a look.

There is also the possibility that your problem was none of the above but rather you blood/alcohol level at the time you were attempting to pick it. :)

Good luck with it.

By reading the pecks of the key it has 5 pins.
" The binding order of the pins will make a difference here too. " the thing with that is I can't tell that any pins are binding. On the other locks I could notice it(my exp isn't alot though). I will look into spool pins about more.
I read in a thread about BEST locks and that they had mutliable share points, so i tryed pushing up alittle on all pins and all the way up but that didn't help.

Thanks

Is this a Schlage Interchangeable Core lock or a regular deadbolt/doorknob lock?

If this is a residential lock, then it has only one shear line. (And, in either case, pushing the pins higher wouldn't make it easier to pick: it's actually different breaks in the pinstack that interact with the two shear lines in an interchangeable core... so, for any given pin, the cut for the upper shearline could be shallower, deeper or the same as the cut for the lower shearline.)

Schlage locks have much better tolerances than many of the cheaper locks (e.g., Kwikset), so this is likely an issue with the amount of tension that you're applying. I went through a similarly frustrating period when I first started working with locks with tighter tolerances: they're not nearly so easy as the Master padlock that we all started with. :)
