The "search" feature on this site isn't working any longer, but Google will let you search the site: there's a lot of material on here that should get you started on understanding what bump keys are and the theory of how they work:

http://www.google.com/search?q=site:loc ... m+bump+key

While bump keys are interesting to know about, you'll find that most of the people here consider lock picking to be more fascinating in the long term: it provides many interesting challenges, and can be a lot more satisfying as a hobby. Stick around, read a bunch, and find out more... :)

It works especially well for modern pin tumbler door locks. 100 years ago it did not work because many locks used what people typically call "skeleton keys" These locks are called lever locks and although not very common in America unless you find one in an old house, in Britain and other parts of Europe they are very common and bump proof. Also difficult to pick.

Back to bumping though. Typically, the better made the pin tumbler lock, the better and more evenly distributed the force of a bump key onto the individual pins in the lock.

you can read a lot about it by browsing this forum, and reading this http://www.toool.nl/bumping.pdf

welcome to a magical land. =)
