Picked this up at wal-mart a year ago, i raked it a few times back then and didn't pick it up again until recently. For the life of me I cant open it again! It has security pins (which makes me wonder how i managed to rake it the first few times) and i've been practicing for weeks straight on it and can't do a thing with it. It seems that I have to apply a lot of tension to even get any pins to bind. Anyone familiar with this product or who has suggestions please let me know as this post is more a complaint than a request for information.

I had a look at a few of these a while back. Basically just a normal #140 with an 'attractive' plastic coating on the lock and the keys.......expect up to three spool pins. Raking with very light tension is effective, as is single picking with very light tension. If you'll pardon the pun, tension is the key!

Raking is no good on those locks with security pins.
You have to learn how to pick it pin by pin.

Maybe it helps to press in the shackle somewhat. Quite often this helps to "free" the core somewhat.

Sometimes you have to experiment with different methods for theese locks until you find one that works good 4 that particular lock . Frustrating eh?

Ha, forgot about it, sorry everyone. The Bogota style rake, espoused (and produced) by raimundo works wonders on all kinds of spool pins. A very rapid and light raking seem to work best for me.

i had this same problem with one of my locks i raked it 2 times it poped open and i have been trying forever and get i open at all

SUCCESS! After like 3 months of working with this lock, I just now picked it about 50 times. I guess when it rains it pours. The funny thing is, that after seeming impossible for 3 months, all at once just in the past 15 mins it seems like the easiest lock ever. It is SUCH a good feeling, it's like the first time I picked a lock. 3 spool pins in this lock and I finally figured out how to work with them.

Anyone have any suggestions on a slightly more difficult lock to work with now?

If you are looking for security pins, try out an ABUS or American, of course

The master that you have has some spring tension to overcome right? I have a similar one without security pins.. I would like to try the one you guys are talking about. I have a Brinks R70 Diskus style padlock that is not very hard... It was a challenge at first, but now it is pretty easy. It has a little spring tension to overcome and what feels like a spool or two for your picking pleasure! It is only a 4-pin like I believe the Master #40 (the diskus style one, correct?) Then there's always the original ABUS diskus

I have not had much luck raking American or ABUS locks. I like the feedback from the ABUS locks that I have dealt with

I like American, but I don't care for the way they feel. I just like the satisfaction of knowing I can open them even if it takes a while!

Picked at 2 shackleless Master padlocks the other day. I could open fairly quickly and the other I just quit messing with because I had stuff to get done. One was a Pro-series I believe... Something else for you to try

I think it had 3 spools, and is the only masterlock that I think I have encountered with spool pins. I borrowed these from a friend for the day while he ran some errands.. I didn't want to give them back but unfortunately I did..

They felt more like a door lock to me than a padlock. Harder than a Kwickpick, er, uhm.... Kwikset

ahahahaha!

(I certainly hope kwikset doesn't make padlocks! YOW!)
