Which House Lock to Buy

Postby _ » 3 May 2008 19:20

I'm sure its probably on here somewhere, but I didn't know where to look. Which house lock is best for honing your basic skills? I want something a little more difficult than a Kwikset, but not much more difficult. I'd also like something that disassembles easily so I can repin it. Should I get a deadbolt or spring latch? I can't spend more than $20 but prefer to spend <$15.

OK, what features should I look for? Is there a specific model you know of being dissection-friendly?

Schalge is a well made lock .. stay away from the cheep " F" entry sets ( home depot / lowes ) go with any deadbolt.. the cylinder is the same in the cheeper Deadbolt as the top of the line model ( well.. with exception of the 700/ 800 series with primus cylinders).
You shouldn't have any problem taking it apart .. there is a sticky here somewhere that explains how in detail.

Could you explain what an "'F' entry set" is?

You wont likely find a Schlage for less than $20 at any local shops though. You'll have to buy online to get one at that price. Schlage isn't expensive but it's not a cheap brand either.
