I have asked myself the same question and the best explanation I have come up with is those two flat retaining bars/springs have a really sharp edge to keep the lock inside the handle, and once removed it sheers some of the metal from in the doorknob with it. Therefore, when trying to reinstall it, those teeth do not have as much to hold on to, which in turn makes it easier to remove thenceforth.
Those retaining bars (for a lak of better words) are spring loaded but very brittle, so trying to bend outwards will break them....and that was my main inquiry for that tool in my previous post. I suppose they didn't break off since you didn't mention it did, so that's a good thing.
