I'm debating on whether to buy this one or the one made by A-1. My shop uses and likes the A-1 but if this other one works too then I rather get this one so I can have something different from everyone else.

You could make one that looks the same for alot less.

I haven't used a tool like that, but it makes me wonder if it's design helps from the retaining springs (for lack of better words), from breaking. I have had a few Kwiksets do that to me while pushing from the opposite side.

To me that tool seems to be just fine, but I don't have any experience about any of them.

Well I ordered it anyways. I'll get it on Friday so I'll let you guys know how it works out.

Well it isn't working out as well as I had hoped. First try I snapped the supplied blank off in the lock and the lock housing didn't come out. This was on a regular kwikset knob set. Second try was on a Smartkey lock and also snapped off in the lock.

Seems like if the lock was never removed before it is much harder to try and pop out but once its been out once it get easier.

Any tips on how to better use these tools? Do you turn the rear wing nut or whatever slowly, fast or do something else while trying to pull the lock out of the knob? My co-worker just busted the key portion of his A-1 puller the day before as well so I think this is a common problem with these tools.

I may be mistaken but I think they only work on the older knobs. The newer ones don't pull out the same way.

You gotta be kidding me. Hmmm...but the housing does come out way easier after its been popped out once which I am trying to figure out why.

Well the main weak point seems to be the key so I'm wondering if I used something stronger if it would remedy the breakage problem. Do they make KW1 blanks out of steel or something stronger than brass? If they do maybe I can use that. I don't care if I have to spend hours filing and grinding, just need this thing to work without it busting and getting jammed in the lock.

I have asked myself the same question and the best explanation I have come up with is those two flat retaining bars/springs have a really sharp edge to keep the lock inside the handle, and once removed it sheers some of the metal from in the doorknob with it. Therefore, when trying to reinstall it, those teeth do not have as much to hold on to, which in turn makes it easier to remove thenceforth.

Those retaining bars (for a lak of better words) are spring loaded but very brittle, so trying to bend outwards will break them....and that was my main inquiry for that tool in my previous post. I suppose they didn't break off since you didn't mention it did, so that's a good thing.

The clips didn't break immediately, took about 7 or 8 times popping it out for it to finally snap off.

Lucky you, they both broke the last time I had to remove one (it was an older lock, but still). Only if they made a tool you could use to pull them in with, there would be no problem then and the lock would practically fall right out.
